The Quirky Cars Mystery (update: 1911-12 Singer plus two 1912 Phoenix cars)

Bill Coates sends a kind e-mail: "It's about time I put something back into PWC after all the good response to ads I've had recently! So here is a photo I discovered in a junk shop yesterday.  I know where it is - Keswick Cumbria UK - but I don't recognise the vehicles.  Obviously I would love to know what they are, especially as I am a Singer afficionado!"

editor: the photo added by Bill is showing two big tourers, an omnibus and a smaller runabout. The car at the far left and far right seems to show the same cathedral shaped radiator. As two of the cars carry advertising it looks like a company materials line-up. Finally we wonder what became of the Quirk company. We learned that at least in 1949 they were still in business and sold a 1905 Alldays & Onions...

UPDATE II by editor: it appears that the depicted cars left and right are not Iris but Phoenix automobiles. Please read the below comments by Mr.  Friend and Ariejan Bos. We just hope that the two gentleman can explain us about the differences between Phoenix and Iris...

UPDATE by editor: we tend to follow William Hearne with respect to Iris. Just by coincidence this weekend we saw a very similar car with identical radiator in the most recent edition of The Light Car. For more pictures and info check Grace's Guide

Only based on bonnet shape a side view or angle view from behind you wouldn't see much difference between Phoenix and Iris. Iris however didn't build these small voiturettes, their smallest car in these years being a 15 hp model. And although the photo is not very sharp, if the cars had been Iris, you would certainly have noticed the downpointed side of the very distinctive Iris-radiator on the left car.

There is a Quirks Motor Company at Wickford in Essex. Don't know if they're related - it's a long way from where the photo was taken.

The alldays and onions mentioned in the article was bought in 1949 by Quirks garage from W. Goodchild of Threlkeld who had taxed it since 1925. It was sold to the Potter bros of Kirby Stephen in 1956. Extract taken from the Registration Particulars in my possession.

According to Wikipedia, Iris had a distinctive diamond shaped radiator. The cars were designed by one of the de-Havilland brothers of aircraft fame.

If you will look at the uploaded Phoenix picture you will probably change your mind with respect to Iris.

I do not wish to offend the Editor, but Mr Bos has the identifications spot on. Any doubt about the identity of the two small cars disappears when one learns from the 1912 Michelin Guide to the British Isles that Quirk's Garage in Main Street Keswick held agencies for ... Singer and Phoenix cars!
In the 1950s and into the 60s Mr Quirk (presumably 'Junior') owned a 1904 single-cylinder Darracq that he used in Veteran car events.

Luckily there is one Singer in the picture, the light coloured touring car, which is a 1912 model. The tiny cars on the left and right are both the same make, a Phoenix of 1911-1912. With respect to the charabanc I'm not fully sure, but probably it's a slightly older Albion.

I think the tow cars with 'cathedral' radiators are Phoenix cars of about 1910.

Cars on far left and far right could possibly be Iris manufactured 1905-1915. 15, 25 and 35hp 4 cylinder cars were made, supplemented by a 40hp six in 1907.
