Het MG Airline Coupe Mysterie
Lew Palmer is niet alleen de eigenaar van een MG PB Airline Coupé, hij houdt ook de wereldwijde lijst bij van alle bekende MG Airline Coupes. De Airline was een aantrekkelijke carrosserie ontworpen door H.W. Allingham en gemaakt voor MG door Carbodies, hoewel er ook een paar werden gebouwd door Whittingham & Mitchel. Ze werden meestal gemonteerd op MG's N-Type en P-Type. Er is echter nog een Airline opgedoken met een iets andere carrosserie. Deze Airline Coupe heeft verschillende kenmerken die niet voorkomen op andere N-Type Airlines. Let op het verzonken reservewiel, de ventilatieroosters in de scuttle, vaste ramen in de kwartieren, anders gevormde deuren en (waarschijnlijk) oprolbare ramen in plaats van schuiframen. We hebben een foto bijgevoegd van hoe een "echte" Airline Coupe eruit ziet. Bestudeer deze twee en vertel ons of u de verschillen tussen deze carrosserieën kunt verklaren.
Update IV door MG-historicus Wiard Krook: "Dit is een MG NA met chassisnummer NA/0540 die oorspronkelijk werd geleverd met een Airline Coupe body. Tegenwoordig heeft hij een replica K3 body. De originele Airline body is waarschijnlijk gesloopt. Hij wijkt inderdaad enigszins af van de meeste andere Airline Coupés. Waarschijnlijk is dit het verschil tussen de Carbodies en Whittingham & Mitchel carrosserieën.
UPDATE I door Josef Kubišta: "Ondanks dat ik niets kan toevoegen aan deze specifieke auto / carrosserie, stuur ik de foto van (naar mijn mening) nog beter uitziende MG gebouwd door Uhlik, Praag. De auto bestaat nog in vrijwel ongeschonden staat."

This car was shipped as a chassis only with the body built in the style of an Airline Coupé, probably by Aspinal in Australia. The racing body installed by Ted Loversidge has now been removed and the car is being returned to proper Carbodies-style Airline Coupé by Tom Metcalf.

The car as shown is it was built originally as the original Airline Coupe and by the number plate was as in New Zealand at the time and also it is recorded as such from near new. The car running was owned by Ted that is well known to have been fitted with a body after the original was removed and buried where I said earlier. Definitely NA 0540 as shown and not a K Type. The brake size of a K type is 13" and the NA is 12", difficult to tell in respect to the photo any way but could have been changed.
The K type in all forms preceded the N types that is recognised as where the Airline Coupe was developed.
My P type is a 1934 made car but has the PB grille and dash bd of a PB and in reading the extensive factory changes made in 1935/36 to satisfy the first owners complaints about the car running, many upgrades appear to have been made in 1935/36,

Could this be a K type? It would appear to have larger brake drums than a normal N type.

From other photos I have seen of the NA0540 the number plates are clearer and the Plate number 282 . 588 which is the same as the one I submitted the plate compares with 1951 to 1956 as a black plate with white letters that have a coma in the middle. Definitely an New Zealand plate format.

I was a neighbour of the late Ted Loversidge and purchased MG P 0466 of 1934 from him in 2009. Ted had spoken about the NA Airline Coupe that he had fitted a K sport replica body to. Ted told me the MG NAO540 body was located at a dump site and buried where a hotel was eventually built in the 1970s. The location is approximately at 51 to 55 Pages Road Aranui in Christchurch, New Zealand, a sad loss of both.

My best guess is that a customer specified these changes.
So far as I know, Whittingham and Mitchel did not make any Airline Coupe bodies. They did make the 2/4 seater tourer designed by Allingham for the N-Type chassis.

This Airline body would appear to be on an N-type chassis. Note longer wheelbase, longer bonnet, longer running boards, & larger brake drums. It is most likely that an earlier owner has built new doors to accommodate wind-up windows and sacrificed some of the aesthetic appeal of the Airline to do so. Certainly the door skins have been replaced as the lower window edge is now horizontal and the curved swage line is absent. As so few of the N-type Airlines were built it is also possible that a customer could specify factory changes.
