New York mysterie auto
Er zijn oude foto's en er zijn hedendaagse, nietwaar? Welnu, met PreWarCars als onderwerp zijn ze nu allemaal op weg naar het eeuwfeest, maar er kan ook best een tussencategorie zijn. En deze mysterieuze foto past in die groep. De hier afgebeelde auto op het gazon van wat een show lijkt te zijn, lijkt een laat-1920, vroeg-1930 auto te zijn. De foto zelf werd genomen ergens in de jaren 1960 (geen verdere informatie bekend) toen de auto nog als klassieker moest worden beschouwd. De foto zelf is nu zo'n 60 jaar oud.
Maar het is de auto zelf die ons in de eerste plaats aantrok. Wat is het? Met die stalen wielen was onze eerste gedachte dat het een Packard kon zijn. Maar misschien ook niet. Ja, het lijkt veilig om te zeggen dat de foto is genomen in de VS, en met zijn New York plaat een Amerikaanse merk zou zeker logisch zijn. Maar wacht even, dit is een rechts gestuurde. Dat had ons verbaasd. En dan is er nog die ongewone achterkant, met een soort fastback-vormig dak met twee uitstulpingen die eindigen in lage achterruiten. Het maakt het geheel erg breed. Het is zeker ongewoon. En hoe zit het met dat frame? Bedoeld om iets vast te houden, maar wat?
Feit is dat het door velen werd bewonderd op deze show in de jaren 1960, wat je ook doet afvragen hoe bijzonder het was — en mogelijk 60 jaar later nog steeds is. We horen het graag van u.

Looks more like an armoured car than a hunting vehicle, was the intention that one shot from inside the vehicle? Was that the function of the little "trap door" on the rear and the strange split side windows? I would have thought it was designed by someone indulging in substance abuse, maybe it was Dali, it's weird enough?

This model was ordered as a hunting car by Mr. Astor, owner of the Hotel Waldorf Astoria in New York. Its surrealist colours are inspired by the Spanish artist Salvador Dalí.
But why is the old picture showing a black car and the museum displaying a yellowish? Who was the coachbuilder?

That was my thought as well: Hershey. That would be the old stadium. I attended for 44 years in that period. I'll have a look at all my old photos.

The car is a Renault Nervastella apparently rebodied to be used for hunting. The car was restored and is currently exposed in the Malaga Classic Car Museum in Spain.

I don't know what kind of car it is, but the blue license plate with yellow letters was standard in New York state up until 1972.

What intrigued me was the little light on the rear guard, the octagonal petrol cap and the sloping of the front radiator. Is that a Lincoln style mascot showing through the windscreen? Very hard to tell. Looks very European. I'm thinking something like a 1931 Renault LG1...
