Paris' surprises

Take the time this Valentine day to sit and relax with your beloved one to look back to the city of romance.  Paris, Rétromobile is now a week behind us. Most mentioned of course the one hyping Ferrari record price against a background of less performing post-war sportscars. But that's none of our business at PreWarCar. We were all amazed about the record sale of a 1908 Sizaire Naudin at Euro 120,000 by Artcurial. Or like Jim Kruse put it "a record price for a non Brighton era one cylinder two seater" (haha, he should consider a next career and change from car insurances to auctions). Anyway, we will guide you along a few highlights as we have seen them.
The Lorraine Dietrich pick-up  (check engine) 'bodied' by Martin Otto Lambert Heukeshoven (scrap artist par excellence). For sure less rusty is the perfectly rebodied Amilcar CGS3 in the style of Jacques Henri Lartigue's car. Note the suggestive extra long bonnet and stylish painted wheeldiscs. Nearly the same vintage has the ultra rare end twenties Harris Leon Laisne with avantgarde suspension as later seen - among others - on the 2CV. Now we go back another 10 years in history with the jawdropping beautiful 1914 Mercedes 28/95 Phaeton presented by Axel Schuette. Rumours say that the car has a price tag of 15 million Euros which seems fair in view of the 32,000,000 Euros that was paid for a Ferrari. Somewhat closer to our own wallet - if it was for sale which it wasn't - and due to that one of our personal favourites was the low slung 1910 Gregoire 70/4  13/18HP speedster. Another few years back - yet on our way surprised by a threesome unidentified invaders form Mars -  we were stopped by the holy grail of big bore Renault fans: the 1907 Renault GP known from le Circuit de Sarthe ACF. You have been overflooded with photos and videos of the record cars that came in from the UK, but we're not so sure you saw these golden jewels, the sparkplugs of the Beast of Turin. Yes we are still going back in history. Probably many of you have seen them in the Compiegne Museum but we were delighted to put it mildly to see these 'pre-Benz' automotive dinosaurs. The refined steamer 'boudoir' , the 1878 (!!!)  Amédée Bollée Père 'La Mancelle' and the incredible double-diligence, the 1885 Amédée Bollée Père. Ah, this is Paris, not a single boring corner, never a dull moment. Even when leaving the show exhausted you're entertained. Like opposite the Salon entering Rue de Vaugirard you will very soon look into this Garage Find. After 7 days we feel homesick for Retro already. Still 51 weeks to wait for the 2017 edition, 8-12 February. Better said as Février.

This (pre-war)Mercedes happens to be a race car, built for specific use at the third(3) "GREAT RACE", which did NOT come to fruition.
Cadillac had designed a new engine for this race...

Hi Dominic, you're probably referring to the opening meet at Brooklands, July 1907. One Renault was present in the first race for the Marcel Renault memorial plate. Driver was J. Groves and the car carried number 5 (he didn't win, by the way). Number and letter combinations were used only during a few years and in fact only for few events also: the Grand Prix de l'ACF of 1906 of course, and next the 1907 Kaiserpreis, the Targa Florio of 1907 and 1908 and the two 1907 races in Brescia. If there was a 2A in the race, it never was a Renault. The answer will have to come from the owner of the Renault racer, I suppose.

The race I mention of course was the "FIRST RACE in BROOKLANDS history", and THAT DAY is deserving of MUCH MORE attention than afforded. An excellent article on ALL RACES that day can be found from "The AUTOMOTOR Journal, July 13th 1907. Speed did reach 100mph that day, and CARS WERE ASSIGNED NUMBERS, the very odd 6 cylinder NAPIER winning the Marcel Renault Plate, number 6.
MANY great photos are within that article, each being the artsy type we all relish, 13,500 people attended, the RENAULT is not even mentioned in text, so the MYSTERY remains which should not be a mystery?

Ariejan Bos, perhaps you can determine this "number", I only checked a preliminary.
From "Grace's Guide to British Industrial History"/1907 Brooklands "1st" race meeting(Sat., July 6th, 1907), there were 6 PLATE races, one being "Marcel Renault Memorial Plate", which I think was the "first" scheduled..
This race was the ONLY plate race in which a Renault competed(P. Kerr- Smiley("35" h.p., 3202lbs, weight changed for final heat?). Driven by J. Groves?
Qualified for final heat after placing third in first heat, did not place 1-3 in final.
No number given, not among the photographs there.

Unfortunately I couldn't be there, so I'll have to do it with the pictures. Nice overview, but the Grand Prix Renault confuses me. The picture behind the racer is not 1907, but shows Szisz at the start of the 1906 Grand Prix with the Renault with number 3A (which makes more sense of course, 110 years!). So what is the racer with 2A? There was no Renault in the 1906 race with this number (the other Renault racers had 3B and 3C) and as far as I could check there was never in any a race a Renault having this number. Besides, looking at all details, the car is certainly not 1906, not 1907 (but close!), and also not 1908. Is it a restored car, a replica or a recreation? Who knows?

Editor: as usual very interesting what you add here. I think we whould contact Renault themselves to shed light over this matter.

£976,087 is what was paid for the 1914 Mercedes at Bonhams Ebeltoft.
