Photos when his father was young.

Some great photos were sent by Alistair Dray, taken by his father when he was a young man. His father visited the UK and Europe in 1962-1963. He was 'road crew' for Len Southward, who brought his 1904 Wolseley to UK for London-to-Brighton, and also he followed Bruce McLaren around some of the GP circuits.

The photos are of Mephistopheles resting in the paddock, and another of a fine Alpine Ghost.

Editor: Thank you, Alistair, for these photos. What I really like is that, with photos from old car events, you cannot always see in what year they are made. Yes, the whole world changes, politics change, our hair is getting a bit more grey but the cars will stay the same. And quite often the people in it will dress like they lived in another era.

Re. the RR Silver Ghost, this is a rebodied 1914, or later, chassis evidenced by the large diameter brake drums which came in with the first lettered chassis numbers. The cantilever springing was standard from 1912, (chassis 2100) but first appeared in 1911 on chassis 1700 and 1701, the latter being the record breaking London to Edinburgh and Brooklands car.

Politi, I believe the rear springs are ‘semi-elliptic cantilevered’.

.. Politi,.. the rear suspension is called ' cantilever ' .. it was invented by Charles Brady King for his ' KING ' car,and he must have sold on the patent to Sunbeam RR and the like. I own a 1914 KING V8, which also has this same setup even tho he used it much earlier .. John Ryder..

The rear suspension of 52 (the Rolls-Royce) is the cantilever spring system that replaced the three-quarter eliptics in 1912. The springs are not "underslung". Is that what you were asking about?

Politi, I think the correct description is cantilevered semi-elliptic .
Bugatti rear suspension is quarter elliptic, most common is just semi-elliptic (not cantilevered).

I'm guessing that the Rolls-Royce is 1912 chassis 2087E with its original Hamshaw tourer body. You can just see the well and bracket for the spare wheel (which it normally carries)and the wheel hubs look like Rudge-Whitworth (which 2087E has).
