Purposely disabled Peugeot 401 Camionette ?

Peter Hill recently purchased this wonderful looking truck.

"Everything appears to be there but the vehicle looks like it has been deliberately disabled at some time in it's life. The fuel pipe has 2" removed, the HT lead is missing and the battery carrier has been deliberately pushed up by a jack so you cannot fit a battery. Is it possible that this was common practise at some time in the past, to avoid taxes?
Information and parts seem to be non existant through the web, does anyone know where I might find more information on these 1935 vehicles?"

editor: dear Peter, Never say never when you're at PreWarCar. You will read an amazing story about reunited parts later this week. So our advise, try a Wanted Peugeot 401 parts advert. Don't blame us when you get inundated with  parts. Especially as it is today the French independence day '14 juillet' the French may do their extra best for you.

Been a long while, the engine was removed and given to a recommended engine 'specialist' after four years of waiting I paid him some money and took it back, it is now with another reputable outfit but after yet another year it is still not finished and I am another £4,500 worse off! Considering cutting my losses and selling but who would buy it? Not a happy camper!

Completed beulieu, still need radiator lion mascot, front drums are cracked, does anyone know of scrap yards in France which have pre war parts such as front axles?

editor: Peter, for the mascot and axles we advise you to post a Wanted Advert.

Wow! Big update! The vehicle started life as a taxi and was converted by L Mazaud of St Ybard Correze in the Limousin region of France. This might explain the amazing condition of the artisan constructed wooden 'cage'. Still not running as starter motor has been sent away for a rebuild. Chassis is sound, radiator cap missing. Have completed refurb of rear 'cage' new canvas (matching old one) and new panels replacing woodworm eaten ones where required. I will be attending Beaulieu Autojumble in my quest for parts.

Many thanks for your comments especially help with Depanoto link which I will follow up forthwith. Regards disablement, the vehicle would only have been three years old at the outbreak of war and judging by it's condition it has seen a lot more than three or so years work. Thanks all for your input. Kind regards Peter

Warrick, this is just the thing to transport all your pre-war lawn mowers and stationary engines. Joris, you should get him to write an article about them for a bit of fun. David Smallacombe

It doesn't look like being disabled for 70 years..It seems that somebody took off these parts to prevent children to drive..

Have you tried Depanoto for the spares you need? They seem to be able to supply bits for many old French cars and have helped me in the past. There is a lady there who speaks English, I think the daughter of Monsieur Boutet the original proprietor.
I am sure that there is also an owners' club for the marque.

Greetings, prewarcar.com is a great site and I am amazed by the variety of vehicles being continually unearthed. I echo the comments of Frans above, I feel disablement such as this more than likely occurred to prevent use of the vehicle by occupying German forces - which in this case must surely mean, would it not, that this light truck has not had any form of use since the war? Kind regards and keep up the good work. Warrick Hansted, Australia.

Hello, the car was probably disabled to avoid it being stolen by the "boche" during the war.
