Racing in the dunes at Zandvoort

Today all eyes would have been on Max Verstappen. The young and talented Red Bull Racing driver should have made the Dutch proud this weekend in the dunes of Zandvoort. But also this race has been postponed because of the pandemic.

That is why we would like to show you some old race footage instead. On June 3, 1939 the first street race took place in the resort town Zandvoort which can be seen in the first video. Starting with the F- class (3000-5000 cc) followed by the Sports-class (from 1500cc).

The (permanent) racetrack in the Dutch dunes was constructed after the war. The first race the “Grote Prijs van Zandvoort” (Zandvoort Grand Prix) took place on August 7, 1948. This race was won by Prince Bira of Siam (now Thailand) in a Maserati 4CLT and can be seen in the second video.

Alberto Ascari won in 1952 the first Formula 1 race at the Zandvoort Circuit, ending in a 1-2-3 for Ferrari. And after a 35-year hiatus from the championship, we are really looking forward to see some Formula 1 race cars in action on the track at Zandvoort!

Hello Everyone,
This video is great! However, I don't believe it could be from 1939.
There is a 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe in the race. I don't believe the 1940 model was available in June of 1939. Also there is a streamlined roadster that looks rather postwar. It looks similar to a 1948 Allard. Though it isn't one. But, this streamlined roadster could still have been built before the war. Further thoughts anyone?

That may have been the inaugural race in August 1948? Prince Bira raced a Maserati there and made quite a few headlines. A Google search will come up with plenty of pictures.
