Restored to Packard Glory:1937 Super Eight

It's often said but seldom realised: a running restoration... Gunther Hoyt writes: This car is one of four known 1937 Super Eight Five Passenger Coupes. It is driven very regularly and is a wonderful car on the road and at shows! I have owned the car since 1986 and have "step by step" restored it to full packard glory. It is above all else a driver, not a museum!

The transmission is now flawless, silent and crisp. The rear springs have been cleaned, oiled and are "springing" nicely. The car is a now to drive. Happy Thanksgiving to fellow motorists in the US and to other Packard drivers: get the transmission right!

The last "step" is a complete overhaul of the transmission. Excellent synchs are available from Christian Ackermann of Switzerland. Bearings are available in US. I will report on the result of this final "step" shortly. otherwise the car is 100% done. It will go on the 2016 CARavan in New England and will climb Mt. Washington. Come join me.

I have a 1950 Packard that is a running restoration. It sometimes was disappointing. After I rebuilt the radiator and installed it the water pump failed the next week and I had to pull the heavy radiator again. I replaced the battery and regulator, rebuilt the generator, and right after that the electrical system shorted and I had to rewire the car. I had replaced the headliner before the rewiring so that prevented me from replacing all the wires. There were many other experiences like that. However the car was not down for 3 years to do a full restoration.

A running restoration is a smart way to go in my opinion. I wanted to do that years ago with a rare Packard that I owned at the time. Unfortunately, I was talked into doing everything. I was in so deep I ended up selling it, much to my regret. Should have stuck to my first plan.
