Schlumpf museum's reserve on holiday

Kassel is celebrating the 1100 years since its foundation, and among other events, an exposition of 40 most interesting cars from the French National Car Museum Cite de l`Automobile in Mulhouse will be exposed there from May 1st  to July 31th 2013. So, don’t worry French readers, all the cars will return to the obscurity after two months. As everything from the Schlumpf collection, there are incredible things hiding in the catacombs of the museum. More than 150 cars are well kept in big garages, some of them (the most interesting, we think) have been never restored or presented to the public. They exist in various grades of decay with rotten bodies and interiors, flat or missing tyres, wood worms and cobwebs. Other cars are old exhibits that were shown in the museum many years ago, as the 1939 Mercedes W154 that was once driven by Caracciola and von Brauchitsch (see photo 6). The organizers of this amazing exposition want to ask a question to all the visitors: Are they ordinary old cars or objects of art? Should it be allowed to restore such cars to their former glory, should we preserve them in the present condition or is it better to accompany their decay?. For the real aficionados, perhaps the cars which were restored in the 60s to that era standards maybe now should be restored to today's high level. But please, let untouched the unrestored cars!

Re: photo 6. I see the exhaust manifold; what is the white structure that is running back from the radiator(?) to the top of the engine? I first took it for the intake manifold.

A agree with all, and here in India we had this debate about the Nixam's Napier cars which were restored for the show, paid for by Cartier, restored by the curator, and won prizes. But that is another topic. Cars should be left alone when they are recognizable for what they once were, and further detioration should be stopped. And they should be made to work. But they should never be treated as carcasses, undignified becoming the butt of jokes. At Cartier there was a RR P II, a highly original car with superb original interior but flaking body paint. See http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/vintage-cars-classics-india/115999-third-cartier-concours-delegance-feb-2013-mumbai-pics-page-19-a-22.html post 325. The owner of this car feel shy because of this condition, at least some sympathtic touch up should be done. Every time the doors ar opened, some paint falls off when closed.
Just my opinion. Regards Harit

This 1939 Mercedes W154, in this condition, gives a "Kick" when you can see 74 years of history right in front of you. Please save some of the old racers like this but collect the history of them and show it at the same time.

Here's my little bit of wisdom.
Old cars, repair where possible, conserve where practicable, get it running and on the road where
it is supposed to be. Beauty and function, hand in hand.Leave some patina, which cannot be found in a paint box.Let the car drip oil and grease where they should. They are objects or propulsion, not deities.
They were NEVER designed just to be looked at, like porcelain, or fine paintings.

I think you can´t say yes or no, it depends
of the codition of the car.
Cars should have a save Restoration, you shouldn`t make everything new, as we did in the sixties, technik should work, so you can drive the car, but patina is importand, not always new painting, like some Cars which look as left yesterday
the fabrik.

"Sympathetic Restoration"
Keep the cars clean and well maintained, Period parts, Touch up the scratches, until it's time for a repaint !
Something that the Visitors can touch, and go back to their friends and say,
"I touched Caracciolas winning car, WOW !"
That's what keeps history alive in people !
