a (non) Swiss Mystery racer.(UPDATE II: Isotta, Mathis, Martini, Buick..? )

Carlo Azzi  from Lugano Switzerland recently bought a set of glass negatives showing this awesome, sleek bodied racer. Yet he has no idea what make, model or year it is. He only suggests that possibly the black plate ending with 251108 may bring the answer. Is this registration plate Italian, Swiss or maybe even US? There is another view on the car with the driver in his seat (no, not the wine drinking youngster!) Once more this picture makes clear this is not a big machine. But the lines are most subtle, with the radiator waistline continuing in the low rear end of the car and a brilliant swept line bringing together cowl, door topline and seats. Please take also note of the door which is facilitating the passage of a shoe... We probably are wrong but according to our gutfeel it all adds up to an Italian design. Fiat, SCAT, or maybe  (re)bodied 1909 Isotta? (however the hubs seem too small compared to the Vanderbilt car)

UPDATEs II: See Read More

UPDATE by Kit Foster: The plate is Pennsylvania, either 1910, 1912, 1913 or 1914 (we can't see the year designation, which is hidden by the spare tire).

Many details correspond with FENC IF, such as shaft drive, ten spoke/five hub bolt front, and twelve spoke/six hub bolt rear wheels. Radiator and cap are believable. The rear of the chassis is definitely not of a Dieppe racing FE; but the resolution of the photos does not define whether it has 3/4 elliptic springs or semi-elliptic with a forging that FENC had, a bit similar to those of the late T head 4 cylinder Stutz of the twenties. The points that would indicate it is not Isotta are the low rake of the steering column, which is not typical; the steering wheel, which does not appear to have the correct T-section spokes; and the staight line of the front axle beam, whereas all FE and FENC Isotta front photos have a curved front axle beam of similar shape to the L-head Mercers.

Those front headlights sure look like early Cadillac electric sidelights to me.

The features of the car like the 3/4 elliptic rear springs with an underslung shackel, the 6 bolt hubs with small hubcaps and 10 spoke wheels in front,12 spoke in the rear are like a 1910 Buick. The eletric headlights appear from a 1913 Buick.

Construction of rear springs is very typical !
I agree to possibility of Isotta Fraschini, type ENC, FH or FHNC

But also similar to 1913 Mathis (see: Mathieson GP racing 1906-1914; and Karslake's Racing voiturettes, photo 59; but that had wire wheels), body also similar to 1920 Mathis 10HP model (see: Georgano's Encyclopedia, 4th imp. page 371)

Also similarities with 1908 GP Martini (See: Karslake's Racing voiturettes, photo 25)- so maybe Swiss after all...

The registration plate is from Pennsylvania, either 1910, 1912, 1913 or 1914, so the photo is almost certainly taken in the USA.
