Tales of a Talbot

In this age of instant gratification, too many young people are missing out on life’s more enduring pleasures, like driving and maintaining a Vintage car such as this handsome Oily Rag 1926 Talbot DC saloon. Sensitively recommissioned after a long period of storage in France, it is now on the cusp of what will probably be the most exciting period of its life to date, having fallen into the hands of one young owner who knows perfectly well just how exhilarating and fulfilling Vintage cars can be.

With a beautiful patina, a delightful bevy of details inside and out and that peculiarly French fixation with right-angles, Toby Bruce was consumed with love at first sight when he noticed the Talbot was about to come up for sale at a local auction. Relying on a spot of paternal generosity, some eager bids were placed and soon he found himself the privileged custodian of the time warp Talbot. Life would soon present many trials, from errant tyres to burnt valves but, with the patience and perseverance required of the Vintage car owner, he has taken them all in his stride and now couldn’t be happier with his purchase.

Toby Bruce gives his account of Vintage motoring from a young enthusiast’s perspective in the February issue of The Automobile, on sale now.

I fully agree with the previous comments, what an interesting and enjoyable article on such a beautiful old Talbot. I am hoping to put my own DC back on the road this year. The car spent its life in New Zealand and ended up as a farm pickup. Your tales have inspired me to get on with it and start my own adventures!

I am also a 12/32 DC owner (unrestored tourer version but badged as a Darracq as it was assembled in the UK) and was asked to help sell the late Peter Helders Collection. The one thing I was fearful of was that someone would buy the Berline and restore the car. Toby is the perfect owner to have the car. He enjoys it and has kept it as it should look having survived so long. It's rare that you see a car with the patina and originality that this one has. These cars are very underrated, comfortable and easy to drive. I've attached a picture of the car as I first saw it tucked away on the right hand side. It was an interesting extraction!

The 1921 Darracq Type A, V8, 4500cc that you can just see on the left hand side of the garage is now in my garage, awaiting the windscreen I've commissioned, before I tackle some of the other work.

Andy, I had a message from Peter's son in law the other day, he said Peter had a plan that never came to fruition of driving the car down to the south of France! He also mentioned the TL, and it got me wondering what did happen to that in the end? And how is the V8 coming along?

What an honour to be featured on this super site. I hope you enjoyed the article and Stefan's superb photos. As for the Talbot, it hasn't been driven for a few months due to the lockdown and winter, but still starts on the button as always. Hopefully the situation by the summer will allow some more adventures...

That article in the Automobile magazine is one of the most inspiring, well written vintage car tales I've ever read - worth the cover price alone (!)
