The affordable auctioneer?

When you flick through the glossy pages of a classic motoring magazine these days or read the equally glowing reports on classic car websites, you may get the impression that all the interesting vehicles are now sold for silly money through the big auction houses, who set up their stalls at all the major events and concourses around the world. But that’s not necessarily so. Richard Edmonds Auctions does things perhaps slightly differently. The Wiltshire based auctioneer specializes in vintage cars and offers a great deal of them in its September 19 sale. And boy, are there some real gems to be found. The lots range from Austin Sevens to items as eclectic as a 1904 Crestmobile1908 Star or 1918 Scripps-Booth. Price estimates all seem very reasonable, dare we add.

We fell for this 1930 Alvis Silver Eagle saloon just because of what it is: a saloon. It comes in one of our favourite combinations too: black paint with a green leather interior. With its original Carbodies body, it has to be rarer than a genuine blower Bentley these days, as so many were turned into sporting Specials over the decades. Future owner, please keep this one as it is!

A Riley also stood out for us. It’s a 1909 12/18 Open Tourer with round radiator and a known history dating back to 1948. Its four-seater body is by Hollick and Pratt of Coventry and may come without a windscreen; driving it will at least keep the chauffeur warm as he’ll be busy pulling levers and hand pumps to keep it going. The passengers would need to use duffel coats.

I have had dealings with Richard Edmonds in the past and found them really good people to deal with. No fuss, they are as good as their word. I would thoroughly recommend them.
