The Cicca Horn Mystery (Update: French!)

Not long ago Tom Morse went through his mom's barn and stumbled upon the old horn you see here. The horn works well although the bulb needs replacement. It was made by a company called ‘Cicca’ and it’s overall dimension is about 450mm including bulb (or 330mm without) by 240mm. Tom has no idea where the horn came from but would like to know its age and where it was most likely used. And what we would like to know, Tom, are there any more treasures in that barn?

Update by Bas de Voogd who found this 1930s (?) French advert on eBay.

Cicca also made Spark plugs, electric horns, lights and mirrors as you can see on this Ad in Europa Motor 1928

Thanks. You are correct about it being made in Paris as there is a small tag on the center of the wire mesh covering the horn opening that reads "Cicca Paris" I found a replacement 4" bulb at a Model T site and now the horn sounds great. Nice deep tone. I suspect this horn was left behind by the previous owners of the barn which makes it at least pre-1940's. The barn was built in 1870 for horse and carriage. Lots of other old stuff in the barn loft but surprisingly none of it car or buggy related; mostly signs, lawn and garden implements and tools.

Hi, you will find a 1920's French Cicca horn I currently have listed on PWC. I would send you another photo but am not sure how to attach it. Cicca also produced very good quality rear view mirrors. They were not uncommonly seen with convex mirrored glass designed to produce a wider field of vision. To my knowledge this feature was offered by them 60 or more years in advance of being more generally taken up by some auto manufactures.

Cicca horns or "avertisseurs" were made by the Paris based Cicca company. They are hard to put a date on as they were produced for many years with bulb operation as well as electric compressor. Their adverts claim that the handbulb horn was in favor with the ladys. I would guess this horn around 1920.
