Perhaps you remember that some time ago we wrote about the amazing button collection of William James Hentges. He now presents us with a mystery: a carved mother of pearl button that dates from around 1900. He writes: “Many of these early auto buttons were carved by artisans who frequently exhibited much artistic license. This quite possibly was due to being unfamiliar with the specifics of a rather new invention. Nevertheless depicted on this button is a very early closed automobile with small front and very large rear wheels and tires. The scallop pattern within the windows may be representative of interior fabric. While it may vaguely resemble the early electric Riker or Krieger automobiles, the electric 1900 Porsche-Lohner, although not a closed car, has similar wheel proportions. Any ideas as to which early auto this button may be trying to represent? Any help would be greatly appreciated.”
