The Future strikes Back!

It’s not our habit to advertise a new movie, but when we saw this poster promoting the latest Men in Black 3, we had to stop and think... We don’t know the story yet, as the movie will be released tomorrow (!), but knowing that it’s a science fiction film and seeing Will Smith driving this futuristic multi-powered uni-wheel, we thought, hey, that’s not the future, we’ve seen that wheel before! This machine is an invention that dates from the late 1920s / early 1930s, but that’s all we know about it. Anybody who can tell us more about it? Who made it...? Did work...? Or not...? Enlighten us!

1904 Garavaglia
The first motorized monowheel seems to be the Italian Garavaglia machine, shown at the Milan Exposition by the House of Garavaglia in 1904. The driver in the photograph sits in his stool with the steering wheel in his hand, but the whole display seems to be balanced by a smaller stabiliser wheel on the side.
The modern one just goes ...... and crashes faster ! See :

Dunno if it worked... but on applying my magnifier to the works gives the illusion of rear wheel drive to one of the 3 idler pulleys :-) It also seems to have a resident means of support the photog has artfully concealed. Doubtless she didn't want to detract from veresimilitude that the thing might be an adequate entrant for the Brooklands Flying Millimeter (believed still held by AFN Limited)
