The greatest Spyker afficionado left us.

Earlier this week Stijnus Schotte died at the age of 49, decades too early. He was still full of ideas. Still full of touring plans and more. He liked a good glass of beer - sometimes two - but more important was his big appetite for US made brass era cars, preferably in usable but unrestored condition. Ranging from early Franklin up to the slightly 'modern' Packard double six. Yet most will remember him as Stijnus 'Spyker' Schotte. As anything Spyker related would make him jump up and down with enthusiasm.

His father was a wellknown collector and Stijnus not only inherited his father's old car genes but also a small museum known as De Autostal including the 1909 car that he campaigned around the globe. Any Saturday morning you could drop in at the pocketsize homely museum for coffee and cake and have a chat with a small gathering of nutheads. When Stijnus was not in the country, he was most probably on tour with friends of the Horseless Carriage Club, with the dutch PAC or with friends in Germany.

Well remembered is the participation with his beloved 1909 Spyker in the Beijing-Paris reenactment of 2005. Further Spyker fame he gathered with the spectacular find in French Guyana of a 1907 model.

Stijnus was always a good laugh and when he was in, he was all over the place. The dustless Spyker is not the first picture to associate Stijnus with. But no matter what, when in future the famous name of Spyker will sound, to us it will have the echo of Stijnus Schotte.

I am related to Stijnus, he was indeed full of life and had a great enthusiasm for the Spyker automobiles. I am very sad he has passed, he left us too soon.

Very sad news about Stijnus. His great enthusiasm and endless supply of jokes made him a delight to have along on the Peking to Paris Expedition. I will always remember his ongoing battle with the evil "silicones" in his fuel.
As someone above said, he was a larger than life character who will be sadly missed.

I first met Stijnus as he came flying into town on the first day of the Alice Ramsey tour in the Spyker. Our car club hosted them for two days and spending time with him was a treat. He had a great love of life and will be missed.

Such sad news, we met Stijnus on the Alice Ramsey Tour in 2009...what a trip! He had such a love of life and old cars, we could not pass a junk yard or interesting looking establishment without stopping to check it out. His Spyker car was an amazing machine and he drove it with such enjoyment. Will always have a special place in our hearts.

Stijnus & friends traveled with us on the Alice Ramsey Centennial Tour from New York to San Francisco in the summer of 2009. I remember one warm summer day in mid-America seeing him taking a break at a root beer stand. I asked him how he liked his drink. He pointed at his Root Beer and said "This stuff stinks" !
What a shock to hear he is gone. Our entire team extend our sympathy to his family.

What a loss. I met Stijnus at the first 100 miles of Amsterdam. What a character he was! A true vintage adventurer in the modern world. He will be missed.

What a shock! A real loss to so many in so many places. Like others, I met Stijnus on his trip across the US with the Ramsey tour. I hosted the participants when they reached Omaha. After two days of rest and activities, I joined the tour for the three days and 500 miles to Cheyenne in my 1909 Rambler. The Maxwell was having problems and moving quite slowly. So the Spyker and the Rambler travelled about checking out junkyards and small country town bars. What a surprise. We remained in touch. A treasured friend to myself and so many. My condolences to his family. He will clearly be missed around the world.

49 jaar is echt veel te jong...
Maar hij heeft wel genoten van het leven en had de juiste hobby! Alle sterkte voor de familie Schotte.

This is very sad news, indeed. I first met Stijnus here in Utah in 2009 when he was participating in the Alice Ramsey Tour. I ventured up to Park City to see the Maxwell and noticed his big, famous, striped Spyker sitting in the hotel parking lot. He was open and friendly to a complete stranger and we struck up a lively discussion about Peking-Paris. He then took me for a fast spin in the Spyker around Park City. Later, I learned he had relatives in Salt Lake and that he need to get to their home so as to catch a flight out the next day, but he did not want to drive down the canyon in all the interstate traffic. I suggested an alternative route over a high mountain pass on a steep dirt road, and he jumped at the chance to do it. I will never forget the wild ride that day over the pass and down the narrow canyon into Salt Lake. We kept in touch for several years as well as several other visits to Utah. He was quite a character, and I was honored to know him. My deepest sympathies to his family.

You can't print what I said when I saw the sad news. I've know Stijnus for years and his Mum and Dad before that when we rallied in Germany. He was always good fun and you always knew where he was from his laugh. I shall miss 'racing' the Spyker on rallies now and the comradeship when he needed oil or fuel. Last July we both got very wet in Melle but it didn't matter as the bar was always open and Stijnus was always there. A sad loss to the old car world and to his family and many friends.

Another of the GREAT CHARACTERS of the old car world passes. Very sad indeed. Condolences to Stijnus' family.
In 2005 Stijnus was a member of The Great 2005 Peking to Paris Expedition Planned by Australian Lang Kidby & his helpers. It was filmed by our national TV channel, the ABC. It was a 6 episode series of one hour each. There was also a book of the Expedition. This was not one of the international rallies.
Google it to watch it. Stijnus was a larger than life character in the series in his Spyker. I believe that this car originally came from Brisbane, Australia before being acquired by Stijnus some time ago.
Jak.
