The Horse & Motor Mystery.

Toby Ballard sends this photo of a fine wooden advertising sign in Barbon Close London. It is a nice sign, but what exactly do horse & motor contractors for a living? Is it some sort of taxi/cab company? Or is it a lease company 'avant la lettre' providing fleet owners with 'mobility services'. Who can tell? Either about G.Bailey or the type of company? We don't think they were very succesfull or they were just not easy with money. It seems the sign was earlier used by a firm with a name beginning with "M". ( looks a bit like M..A..I..L  D..P..O..T...) . Awaiting your comments.

This sign remains of the time that horses were still the king of the road, but motorcars were the new kids of the block. These contractors were literally in the contracting business with horses and motor vehicles. See this article from the new york times in 1913 for a bit of background. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9D0DEFDC153FE633A25755C0A9619C946296D6CF
