The Locust and Eggs Mystery (Upd. 2 x 45HP?)

Our correspondent from Egypt, Mahmoud Ezzeldin, was kind enough to accompany Dirk and Trudy Regter with their Model T during their passage in Egypt. On the way back he visited his friend Amin Khadr, who is the grandson of Ahmed Esawy "Bek" Khadr. Amin had two photos of a Royal campaign held during the times of King Fouad I. The campaign was directed by Ahmed Esawy Bek Khadr in 1930 to control and destroy the locust nests & eggs in South Sinai in Egypt. The mission was held in March 1930 and on the photo is a Renault (a big 6 cyl.?) and on the right an unknown six-wheel car, which has the tins of fuel and water placed on a shelf made on top of the rear wheel fenders,. (Mahmoud doesn't know if this is a homemade shelf or original). The question is of course: what kind of car is that six-wheeler? And maybe we can also pinpoint the exact model of the Renault?

I'm still quite sure these are Renault type MH's. They used type KZ mechanicals, engine, gearbox, etc. Looking at this website, at the overhead chassis photo of an MH http://www.oto6.fr/6roues/6rouesrenault10cv.htm you can see that the overall proportions of the car are big, but the chassis is light and the engine, gearbox and diffs are very small in comparison. The engine only takes up half the bonnet space. Possibly the rear diff is KZ as well. The large bonnet is used on the car to accommodate the over sized radiator. I think the reason everything was made lightweight was that they were expected to travel long distances and needed to be economical (900km on a tank I read once), and light enough to cross sand dunes without sinking. The Renault diamond on the bonnet was phased in sometime in 1925-26, so these vehicles would date from before then, the type MH were first built in 1923.

I have a few more photos from this campaign if anyone is interested. I also happen to know that the Sinai Peninsula had a variety of wild cats (Leopard, Cheetah, Caracal) as well as Gazelles & Ibexes. So the gun could for both protection and hunting. Though I don't think they can hunt a gazelle or ibex using shotgun cartridges, they needed bullets to do that, but a shotgun could scare a big cat that is certain.

Gordon, that's a good point. I don't know how much effect one single barrel shotgun would have on locus control.

Re my comment sent earlier, I meant to say these cars are much bigger than the KZ, probably better to write, bigger model than the 10 HP KZ
Sorry for the mistake in my grammar

Don't know about the cars - but as someone involved in locust control today (and an old car enthusiast)I have to say I love the photo depicting the approach to locust control in 1930. I wonder if he had any other photos.

They are not KZ, much too small. unless the people are extremelly small, more likely 45 HP, Renaults.

I now think that actually both vehicles are the Renault type MH. Both vehicles probably had dual front wheels. You can still see the extra long wheel studs on the left car that would hold the outer wheel. Maybe the four tyres stacked in the background are the outer front wheels for both cars?

Most likely identical vehicles, both Renault and both 6 wheelers.

I thought that it might be an American Reeves Sextoauto, introduced from 1911, but the axle spacing appears different. Maybe just a local adaptation to a large chassis with a lazy axle fitted?

I can also see what could be the radiator cap in front of the windscreen, which would be correct for a Renault. Lots of examples of 6x4 Renaults are on this website;

I can't say exactly what make the 6 wheeler is. It looks like is has a 4 stud disk wheel on the front, this could make it a type KZ or maybe MH Renault 6 wheeler?
