The Rothenburg Condom mystery (update: NAG C4? Stoewer D5? Opel?)

Gunther Hoyt sends this unidentified car with funny history:
" (the photos was shot) About 1920 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber (above is probably pictured one of the city wall gates): my grandfather Hermann G. Schmid and his American cousin Julius Schmid, the well known condom manufacturer. I have no idea what the touring car is. Julius Schmid always drove Packard and talked my grandfather into buying one in 1926."
This car was presumably the predecessor of the Packard. The V-shaped radiator of the large tourer is pointing into the direction of one big Germans built around 1918-1920. But yes, which one...?

I would outrule a Szawe-bodied car, since they were well-known for their rather flamboyant style. Their stylist (and shareholder) Ernst Neumann-Neander was an Art Nouveau artist and wouldn't have designed a coachwork looking as standard as the one on the photo. As for the aluminum wheel covers, by the way: They were available as aftermarkt pieces and look rather odd on this huge phaeton.

SZAWE 1920 ?
Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle. In Berlin Szabo and Wechselmann (SZAWE) were building cars in the 1920-1922 period and used chassis and engine from NAG as basis. These cars were not outstanding or refined but the coachwork designed by Ernst Nuemann-Neander seemed to have had an appeal on the rich and famous.

NAG C4 - that's what I also thought at first glance.
However, there are some details that make me believe it's a Stoewer, rather. First of all, there is the inclined front end of the radiator which the NAG didn't have. Then it appears, that the radiator mask does not form an almost perfect oval like it should be the case with an NAG. And lastly, it's the sheer size of the car which is inconsistent with an NAG C4.
For comparison, take a look at the numerous original photos of NAG C-Types in my online gallery: https://klassiker-runde-wetterau.com/gallery-german-vintage-classic-cars/nag-automobiles-from-berlin/

Bernard may be right, but I am not completely convinced.

I'd agree with Anders - it appears to be a Stoewer, most likely the large D5 type.

While other German manufacturers like Horch, Opel, and NAG built similar cars with v-shaped radiator masks after WW1, one tiny detail at the car in the photo is distinctive: the front end of the radiator net does not follow a vertical line but is slighty inclined.

You won't find this peculiarity with contemporary Horchs, Opels, and NAGs. Audis had a similarly inclined radiator around 1920, but there the overall shape was different, less bulky.

If you want to be perfectly sure, ask Manfried Bauer from the Stoewer Museum in Germany ([email protected]), he is happy to help in my experience.

in these years it gave a lot of car manufacturers in Germany they used V-shaped radiators. It could be an Opel Torpedo for example.
