Edwardian Engine Mystery from Scotland (Upd. Peugeot?)

Martin Shelley sends these pictures of an early engine found in Scotland. It could be any number of makes, but Martin thinks it’s probably French and almost certainly Edwardian in origin, as it has early features like the non-detachable head, wide engine bearers that mount on the chassis rails and open valve gear. It is an L head sidevalve, with three branch exhaust and a single carburetter mounted directly on the opposite side of the block from the exhausts, and feeding via an internal manifold cast in the block. The other distinguishing feature is the very generous alloy water offtake from the top of the block. This is way larger diameter than Martin has seen before, and this is perhaps the best clue to identify it. The large bore indicates the cooling would have been by thermo-syphon (ie no water pump would have been fitted). What is shown appears to be just a crankcase and block. If the crank is missing one can only guess at the stroke, but if the bores were around 100mm (4"), Martin expects the stroke to be around 140mm (5 1/2") making it approximately 4 1/2 litre capacity. Maybe one of the wise men who reads PreWarCar can offer a suggestion?

The engine is somewhat similar to our 1923 Elite from Brand-Erbisdorf in Germany, but is not from that factory. If the crank is from this engine, it appears to be half-balanced, which I think would place it in the early to mid 1920s, but the rest of the design is archaic by that date.
The oil level indicator tower and other similarities suggest German origin, possibly from the same region as Elite, around Chemnitz, Dresden.
