The Slippery Roads Mystery
No quiz today, because next week it’s the start of the holiday season and then we will present you our already famous (infamous?) Six-day Christmas Quiz. In the meantime we want to remind you -especially with The 100 Miles of Amsterdam starting tomorrow- that roads can be slippery when wet. The unfortunate driver of this Washington bus must have taken the turn too quick. Despite the unfortunate accident this is a very interesting photo. Look at the underside of the bus, it is so clean that it is (was?) probably very new. And also take a look at the plumbing running from the exhaust. It has been suggested that it goes to the stairs, probably to keep the ice off. Could this be true? And while you’re at it, take a look at the boy with two faces ;-)

No one has mentioned that in the early days when skidding was misunderstood, It was common practice to fit slicks to opposite corners of the vehicle, & good tread to the other diagonally opposite wheel. The silencer looks to have a take off to a Exhaust heatexchanger for passengers comfort

I think there are no brakes on the front wheels. Can be a pakkage deliveryvan (comp.UPS)

Brake rods and not anti roll bar, lhd and cant see any pipe coming from the rear of the silencer or hole in crossmember. The pipe seems to be bent in several directions could it be a side exit exhaust that got twisted and bent when the bus turned over?

I agree with John Elema regarding the brake rods and cables but surely it is left hand drive, the drag link is on the left hand side of the chassis.

with no profile on the left rear tire while the right one looks almost new, a nice momentum may have been created on an emergency stop that caused the bus to turn over. Could it be that what John Robins thinks is an anti-roll setup in fact are the controls for foot- and handbrake, controlled by the 2 long rods leading forward?

the bus appears to be right hand drive the stairs at the entry are on the left, the radiator looks like an albion. maybe i'm wrong someone will say. happy christmas all.

exhaust heat was often used well into the 20th century to feed heat exchangers not only in busses but also cars.

I'm impressed with the rear axle location arrangements on that bus. There even seems to be an anti-roll setup as well.

To take hot fumes and guide them towards the stairs would maybe help to clean that area but could also be very dangerous for passengers, I think it could be a horn or whistle of some kind that works with the exhaust..

Shows just how long was the exposure needed to get the bus clearly. It didn't move, but the people's heads all seem a bit blurred and the lad probably looked at the bus then the camera.
Perhaps the brand new bus was just being delivered 'OOPS, sorry'!
