The Roadside Mystery (UPDATE IV: 1911/12 Abbott Detroit Model 34 Works Demonstrator)

Why is this girl smiling happily while her friend, husband, lover is in the dirt under the car? Did he say he just solved the issue? Did he ask her to marry him while checking a piston that has left the crankcase? Or is she just glad with her now far superior position and hopes he will stay under the car forever? Questions, questions, questions. At the same time we do not even know what car it is. Not even David Greenlees is very sure. The radiator with its heart formed centre should bring the answer. We hope to hear from you(*) and wish you a grand weekend at the same time.

One other detail to add is that 1913 was the last year for the 34hp A-D to have RHD. They also came in LHD as the transmission got a center transmission mounted shift gate.
This was new with the Continental four for the smaller series. From 1914 on all Abbotts were LHD for American domestic sales.

It is a 1913 34hp Abbott-Detroit. That was the first year for black and nickle head lamps and a painted steel radiator shell. It is the first year for the 34hp Continental L-head. The 1909 to 1912 30hp A-D had an F-head engine. The wheels are too small for it to be a 1912 44. And the 1912 44 still had brass lamps and rad. shell.

the car in question is the works demonstrator which appears in a number of adverts , it is an Abbott-Detroit 1911/1912 model 34 ( note front axle on top of spring ),4cyl 4800cc Continental engine, the driver looks like mort roberts one of their race drivers but may not be, Abbott-Detroit motor cars took 7th and 8th places in the Vanderbilt cup in Savannah in 1911 driven by Carl Limburg no 8 and Leland Mitchell no 9, both were painted blue, They took 6th and 8th in the American grand prix (prize) in 1911 driven by Leland Mitchell and Carl Limburg with an average speed of 66mph for 411 miles. I could go on forever with all the history and race results however suffice to say I have been racing one of these cars for the last 20 years, the driver is probably looking for inspiration, cheers david White

I'll leave it to others to decide what she is smiling about. But the car is a 1912 Abbott-Detroit model 44 touring car. A substantial car with a continental engine.

I believe the car is an Abbott-Detroit, circa 1913. The postcard is part of a series. I've got a few with the same car.
