Several times we have shown you cars driving through redwoods, but never a redwood on a car. Yet this what Charles Kellogg did when he wanted to build himself a motorhome. So he mounted a one-piece carved-out log of a 4800 year old coastal redwood tree on a Jeffrey-Nash Quad chassis, the only truck capable of moving his eight-ton idea. Kellogg hollowed the log with an axe, shaping it into a complete dwelling, including the basic amenities found in today’s RV’s, except for a bathroom and a shower. The motorhome was finished in 1917 and with it Kellogg toured the United States to sell WW I Liberty Bonds. After the war he used it to promote the preservation of the California redwoods. Kellogg’s Travel Log still exists and can be seen in the visitor centre of the Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
