Heeft iemand deze mascotte eerder gezien - of weet hij waar hij vandaan komt? Ik heb er nog nooit een gezien. De vogel is gegoten in messing of brons en vernikkeld. Hij is duidelijk oud en het nikkel heeft in de loop der tijd zijn glans verloren. Er staat geen naam op van de maker en er zijn geen tekenen van identiteit. Het zou natuurlijk zelfgemaakt kunnen zijn, maar dat betwijfel ik omdat de kwaliteit goed is en het een tijdrovend karwei zou zijn geweest.
Ik heb hem onlangs in Engeland gevonden, maar waarschijnlijk is hij Frans, te oordelen naar de radiatordop die Bugatti heet.

Further to my earlier note. The sculptor Hippolyte Francois Moreau (1832-1927, France) produced a large portfolio of work. His sculptures, from large to small, he was famous for his bronze statuettes of young women. He designed a number of car mascots, particularly of animals. I have found one of his pieces, of a Marabou Stork, that is very similar in design and style to the pelican e.g. the wing feathers (and glass eyes again). Photos attached. Too similar to be a coincidence? Moreau's work though is usually signed, and, I believe, those mascots signed Franjou were also by him (?) If you wish to research further, the above may be a good starting point.

Interesting mascot of a pelican and note the glass eyes. Not seen this one before, but I have seen mascots of other 'comical' animals, with glass eyes also. Two examples are shown, a dog smoking a cigarette and a cross-eyed bulldog. Both these however were made in spelter. Those I've seen have not been signed, have no markings to indicate the sculptor or manufacturer, nor have I seen any mascot catalogues of the 1920/30's specialising in these designs. I have seen a photo of a more serious study of an owl, a mascot by Varnier, and that used glass eyes too.
