Unusual wheels for Citroën (update: made by D.F.)

Craig Little is a very active restorer and highly knowledgeable with twenties Citroëns. Still he will stumble over small and larger mysteries form time to time. Like this one:

"I recently aquired these wheels and think they mey be worth of investigation.
They come attached to a pair of B2 Citroen type front hubs which  are fully equipped  with the readily recognised Citroen aluminium wheel cap and Citroen wheel nuts.
Both wheel hubs retain the remains of a substantial 40 mm diameter solid axle.
And both of these axle stubs have been cut with an acetelene torch It appears the whole was once part of a trailer axle.  The central drum part of the wheels makes them a reasonably heavy assembly.
After trolling though countless photos of rear wheel drive Citroens on Google and in Citroen literature, the last photo supplied is the only one of a Citroen (5CV?) I can find equipped with identical wheels."

It may be with the CITROEN that the steel discs functioned to immediate ROAD IMPROVEMENT(and numbers), as had THE MODEL T stateside. Unsprung mass seems to be a 'lost art" today, as SUV's/front drive dominate.

Can any tell me if wire wheels on an RWD citroen were for aesthetic reasons or with a view to reducing the "unsprung mass" ? Our own 1927 Citroen 12/24 has the standard pressed steel discs with friction shocks fore and aft, presented with the potholes of Surrey roads, the car lurches all over the place. Presumably it would be more mangeable if it had wire wheels?

Henry Norberhuis"]Same wheel as on the 1927 Donnet-Zedel GrandSport in the for sale section .
Thanks Henry they are similar to the Donnet-Zedel, but with the benefit of close study they are not identical. There were a number of similar wheels made by various manufacturers. I was hoping that my article would reveal exactly the make.

I think the majority of us know that wire wheels were available on all cars from the beginning of time either straight from the factory or after market. So, it is not surprising to see some on a Citroen. I wonder why you don't see more on those cars.

These cars LASTED through the 1930's, and would have to be prepared for the asphalt/concrete that replaced dirt(including the Autostrada and the Autobahn).

I assume these were fitted when the Bibendum tyres were not available. Wire wheels were available as an optional extra. I have some wheels off a BSA which fit but need a couple extra.

Wire wheels on Citroen are not so unusual. Cars made by Citroen England at Slough were fitted with Rudge-Whitworth wire wheels. I owned a 1933 Rosalie with 16 inch 5 stud wheels R-W wheels which look as though they could have superseded the 4 stud wheels as shown.

I cannot help with the wheels but am amused by the speedometer gear. It is amazing to me just where a Model T Ford part will turn up.
