Vernon car rally

Letter to the editor

Hi, thought you would like to see this fine photo of a car rally taken in Vernon, which is in the Okanagan Valley. After assembling they went for a nice drive on the country roads and beside the lake. This would be around 1912 because to the left we see the Model T has front doors. Beside that we see a 1907 Ford Model N, which is most likely the oldest car there. Next in line is a large Russsel Knight. Then a Hudson, another Model T and.a McLaughlin. On the right is an interesting line of cars and I will let you figure out what they are. They are Canadian, American, British and maybe one French.

I would say there are around thirty cars shown and maybe a few more around the corner on the right which are out of sight. There is another photo of this event from a different angle, but unfortunately of poor quality. However, I believe I can make out examples of Napier, and Vauxhall A and C types. It looks to be a very interesting and enjoyable event in a beautiful location.

Regards, Steve Diggins

On the right side off the photo you can see two large touring cars with their tops up. These are McLaughlin Model 45's and I believe this new top end car was introduced in 1912. Here is a good photo of one of those new cars taken in Vernon at that time. It might be one of the cars in the event photo. It is a magnificent brass era car.
