Wanneer, waar, wat, wie? Een Vauxhall Prince Henry-mysterie
Deze prachtige, sfeervolle foto werd enkele jaren geleden gebruikt om het grote merk Vauxhall te vieren – door Vauxhall zelf. Hij kwam met een persbericht vol van de gebruikelijke lof en verheffing over Vauxhall, waarbij tussen de regels door – of eigenlijk al in de kop, om precies te zijn – werd vermeld dat de nobele Vauxhall C10 ‘Prince Henry’ in feite de eerste Britse sportwagen was. Verschillende media namen dat klakkeloos over en wij ontdekten zelfs dat sommigen er ‘De Eerste Sportwagen Ter Wereld’ van hadden gemaakt, wellicht om het allemaal nog wat spectaculairder te laten klinken? Ach, wie zijn wij om daaraan te twijfelen!
Maar goed, de Prince Henry van ontwerper Laurence Henry Pomeroy wás dan ook een spectaculaire auto. Laten we niet die kant opgaan; u zult dat wel weten. En zo niet, dan komt u daar snel genoeg achter. Wat we ons echter wél afvragen, is wat de foto nu precies toont, want dat werd in het persbericht niet genoemd. Is dit een van de drie pre-productie C10’s die werden gebouwd voor de Motor Trials van 1910, genoemd ter ere van prins Heinrich van Pruisen? Zo ja, dan zou Vauxhall-baas Percy Crosbie Kidner heel goed de man achter het stuur kunnen zijn.
Het kenteken is te zien, maar door de modder op de weg nauwelijks leesbaar. Misschien vormt de motorfiets – DI-106 – de sleutel tot het antwoord? En hoe zit het met de achtergrond? Ongetwijfeld een hotel, te oordelen naar het bord dat net zichtbaar is in het midden bovenaan..?

The photo appeared already in the book From Veteran to Vintage by Kent Karslake and Laurence Pomeroy on p.83, published in 1956.

This is a well known photo and Nic Portway has used it in one of his booklets. He captioned it
"Lawrence Pomeroy with a late production 3 litre Prince Henry chassis prior to having its coachwork mounted. The picture was taken at Mrs Bevan's Lyn Valley Hotel in Lynmouth, a favourite destination for long distance testing."

Other sources state that the photograph was taken outside the Porlock Weir hotel in Somerset, England.
Porlock Hill was one of the steepest in the country, and even when I worked in Vauxhall's Engineering Department in the 1970's Porlock HIll was still used for cooling tests.

As Kieran White has pointed out the motorcycle is registered in Co Roscommon, Ireland & also the fact that there are a substantial number of Rolls Royce Ghosts registered in Co Sligo coincidentally the prototype Vauxhall Prince Henry C10 was also registered in Co Sligo as EI 641 which has been part of The Vauxhall heritage collection since 1946.

The motorcycle was registered in Co. Roscommon, Ireland but the owner was S Hollbrook Crow of Croydon, Surrey.
This often happened because of the culture of operating speed traps in England. Irish County Councils would not cooperate with English police in revealing the ownership of the offending vehicle.
For example there were several RR 40/50s registered in Sligo that never appeared on Irish roads.
