What is it? Quiz #401

With the current reviving interest for 'Edwardian' and 'Brass' cars it won't hurt to brush up our knowledge about a few of the lesser known marques. A good friend sent us this remarkable picture and you may recognise the car on the left and the right - both contemporary high quality cars - at first sight. But sorry, this week we like to gauge your knowledge of the lesse known around motorcar shown in the middle. Just to make things to not too simple our friend decided to blank out the obvious makers badge and the registration plate. The two letter combination that was showing on the badge refers in sound to a considerable lump of iron in France after which yet also to the motto of a british town known for its' cathedral. So it is a british car with a french background and a technical concept from one more 'stop' down the continental road. The design was conventional but refined with ballbearing(!) crankshaft bearings. Contrary to most contemporary machinery it was possible to take the engien-gearbox combiantion form under the car while leaving radiator, dashboard and the full body in place. An excellent, modern car of which you should know.

So check your library and other resources and give us any relevant information on this particular car. Starting with Make and Type. Plus whatever you can come up with, that is to say within 100 words. Please post your answer in the comment box below (please do not email) and be sure to read The Rules under Read More. This may be your chance to win the infamous PreWarCar T-shirt and wear with pride! Results will be published next Saturday, August 22.

I believe the centre car in this photograph, to be a 1909 four-cylinder 12/16 h.p. "FL", whilst the cars on either side are a "STAR", and a "DAIMLER".
Originally called "OTTO", the name was changed to "FL" in 1909. A six cylinder model, of 18/24 h.p. was added to the range in 1912, These six-cylinder engines are thought to have been supplied by Adler. A particularly original 1909 12/16 FL survives in Sydney, Australia.

I believe the car is a FL 12/16 2.0 litre

Manufactured between 1908 and 1914, first by H. De La Fresnaye of Paris who advertised chassis for 7200 F.Francs, then from 1909 by the OTTO works. The cars had the letters FL on their radiator along with a picture of the Eiffel tower which they are named after. All badges featured "Licence Serex", perhaps the designer?

RM Wright and Co. of Lincoln imported FL's for the UK. They used Lincoln City's motto on the radiator Floreat Lindum

Otto stopped manufacture in 1914 and RM Wright were no longer trading by 1931

The Otto was a French car produced from 1901 to about 1903 by a Parisian firm. Subsequently they produced no cars until late in 1908 when the same firm offered the FL on the French market. The badge showed the letters FL with an Eiffel tower, said to be the origin of its name (Eff-Ell). Early 1909 in the UK a 12-16 hp 4 cylinder car was launched by R.M. Wright & Co. of Newland, Lincoln, which was in fact the same car, also called FL, but the letters now being an abbreviation of Floreat Lindum (meaning ‘May Lincoln flourish’, derived from Floreat Etona, the motto of Eton) and showing an image of the Lincoln cathedral. Apart from some novelties facilitating repairs on the mechanical parts, the car was of rather conventional design. The French FL lasted until 1914, for how long the English version lasted is unclear.
The left car on the photo is a Fiat, the car on the right a Daimler, both more or less of the same age.
