What is it? Quiz 449

Our guess is that you recognise the driver more easily than the car. This automobile is exceptionally rare and we are not so sure if one of them survived. A photo is quite hard to find online so we are proud being able to show you this one,  provided by arguably the best experts in this particular field. The shot was taken with only four days short almost exactly 100 years ago on 17 July 1917. The appearance of the car with this driver in fact is a first milestone in a very special automobile career. There are no earlier photos known showing this gentleman with a car.
Interestingly the make of car shown is connected with a handful of famous brandnames and was produced under different names for the home market and export.  The radiator will make you remind of at least two famous makes, one of which participated in New York - Paris. We're afraid that we leave you with more questionmarks than hints so here one extra, thin straw to hold on. The photo is showing the very first time the driver was seen at the wheel of a car! We wish you a brilliant weekend. Be sure to post your answer before Monday July 17 !  The correct answer and source of photo and information will be revealed next week Saturday.

I guess that you it's a SCACCHI, manufactured by Fabbrica Automobili Scacchi & C. in Chivasso (Italy) from 1911 to 1915, founded by Cesare Scacchi, who works a few years together with Luigi Storero which created the mark Caesar.
Photography seems carried out on a car of sports features, so maybe we are a C 90 Sport model.

The car is most certainly a Zust. The driver, I presume, is Enzo Ferrari.

The driver is Enzo Ferrari and the car is an S.P.A. This was one of the companies founded by the fratelli Ceirano (Matteo in this case). The pear-shaped radiator is indeed similar to those used by Zust and Fiat during this period, not to mention Nazzaro.

This is Enzo Ferrari in a CMN car. He was a factory driver for CMN and drove one in the 1919 Targa Florio. I look forward to hearing more about the history of CMN.

Maybe I’m heading into a totally wrong direction, but to me the faces in the picture are from Italian origin. I’m ashamed that I do not recognize the man behind the wheel, but I have my thoughts. The make of the car my thoughts are with Cesare Scacchi. This model 20/30 which was sold in the UK as Storero and in Italy as a Ceasar. Storero a car dealer and manufacterer was a close friend of Giovanni Agnelli co founder of Fiat. Referring to the radiator it resembles Zust and record breaker Fiat. When Scacchi hit trouble Diatto took over.

I’m a three times winner

If this photo is from 1917, then this is a 19 years young Enzo Anselmo Ferrari at the wheel of a C.M.N. (Costruzioni Meccaniche Nazionali).

The car is a 15/25, 3 liter Brixa Züst. The company Züst was founded by Roberto Züst. After his death in 1897, his sons took over and built their first car in 19o2. Production started in 19o5, with cars following the lines of Mercedes. In 1913 the factory in Milano closed, but "Bruxa Züst" in Brescia continued to produce the 15/25 up until october 1917, when the company was taken over by OM, which produced firther 36o cars of the 15/25. One finished third in the New York/Paris race and had been discovered some years ago in a "gold town". two more examples survived, a racer in the Turin museum and a tourer in the hands of the Collins family in the UK

Enzo Ferrari is driving a Turin built Caesar. He competed in this at the Pavullo-Sestola hillclimb which was held on July 19 1917, completing the 26.475 km course in 36minutes, 12 seconds. This was some time before his first actual race in October of 1919 in a CMN.
The Caesar was a 25/30hp rebadged Scacchi (Scacci’s first name was Cesare) which were also called Storeros, being sold through the Italian racecar driver and engineer (also from Turin) Luigi Storero.
The radiator pays more than a passing resemblance to the Zust, also built in Italy
