What is it? quiz #457

This car with three beautiful ladies is of a well-known make, both in France as well as England. Twin sister cars were regular competitors in the London-Brighton run, but checking the starting list I noticed they are absent this year. However, 6 of her sisters of a different model, partly of slightly younger age are present. The three ladies in the car were well-known in their days, but as you may have noticed I have removed their last names. The questions are the following:
 1. What is the make of the car and the year of production?
 2. What are the type and model?
3, What are the last names of the ladies in the car and why where they famous?
 4. And finally: where is Miss Cissie Roberts?
Each of the first three questions answered correctly will be rewarded with 1 point. The most original answer to the fourth question will be rewarded with 1 point too. And of course, the winner will gain the full 5 points. So on your marks, ready and go!

Do not use more than 100 words and be sure to send in your answers before Monday 6th to collect your points for the six-month challenge!

quiz #457

The pictured Gladiator 12hp four-seater rear-entrance tonneau was one of the models launched in 1901 by the Société Clément-Gladiator. The car was designed by Marius Barbarou, and equipped with a 1703cc twin-cylinder Aster engine. A similar one-cylinder 6.5hp model can be distinguished by its shorter bonnet.
Marie Studholme, Ethel Sydney and Violet Lloyd were celebrated actresses in musical comedies that played at the Gaiety Theatre, London. In 1902 they performed together in ‘The Toreador’.
For tracing Cissie (Cissy?), try Twitter (@RobertsCissy). She may be behind the wheel of a vehicle that will not be accepted into a veteran car run.

Quiz #457...Tricky!

The wealthy entrepreneur Gustave Adolphe Clément started in 1896 in the former New Economy Branch “Automobile” with different makes in France and Great Britain.
Here we see a (French-built) Clément Type AC 2L Tonneau from 1902, the last year with the alligator motor cover, with 2 cyl.-1.600 ccm reaching nearly 60 km/h.
We see the Gaiety-Girl-actresses (Edwardian musical comedy as predecessor of the musical) Marie STUDHOLME, Ethel SELWICK and Violet ROBINSON and Cissie is after the end of the performance still with make-up.

Best regards
Fritz Hegemann

I think it is a 1902 Clément 9 HP Rear Entrance Tonneau. Those three ladies have escaped my sleuthing abilities. But Miss Cissie Roberts, also known as the Child Evangelist, surely must have been in Prague at the St. Clement's Cathedral (!). Adolphe Clément was a French entrepreneur manufacturing tyres, bicycles, motorcycles, cars and airships. The British sister cars were the Clément-Talbot, soon to be called just Talbot. Adolphe Clément even was a passenger in Albert Lemaîte's Peugeot, winner of the world's first motor race, the 1894 Paris to Rouen race.

The ladies in the 1902 12HP Gladiator Rear Entrance Tonneau are Marie Studholme, Ethel Sydney and Violet Lloyd, 3 famous actresses from Victorian and Edwardian musical comedy. The original picture, made by the Biograph Studio, was published on June 4th 1902 in "The Sketch" newspaper. Cissie Roberts became better known as the Child Evangelist or Girl Preacher.
The story goes that the ladies picked up hitch-a-hiker Cissie standing by the road. In the next village, while the picture was taken, Cissie was ringing the bell of the local blacksmith, to ask if he could put some extra air in their to weak blown tyres.....

1901 Gladiator Type 4, with a 6.5 hp single-cylinder Aster engine, capable of 25 mph! The Gladiator company was part English, part French, being owned by Adolphe Clement and Lord Talbot, who bought out Alexandre Darracq and Paul Aucoq in 1896.
The lady occupants of the motorcar are Marie Studholme, Ethel Sydney, and Violet Lloyd, who achieved fame as members of George Edwardes' stage performers known as the Gaiety Girls. And little Cissie Roberts was no doubt at the local chapel, preaching against the evils of gaiety.

I believe that the name "Miss Marie" for the young lady to the LEFT is incorrect.
She is Katharine(Kittie) Taylor(Bard), born 1867, married 1888 to an educator(Junius Theodore Bard) from America, who eventually became a Lt. Col. and Commandant at a military academy prep school. As you can see from the photograph, Katharine's demeanor is quite military.
