What is it? Quiz #474

What a lovely car this is, a chain driven racer. Quite an interesting body. Looks a lot of fun to drive but unfortunately, we cannot find any example that is still around. But ok, this is not a driving report but the quiz. And in this weeks quiz we give you 3 hints:

1.       There is candy which has the same name as the car.

2.       There is a professional cyclist with the same name as the builder.

3.       The photograph was taken at a famous circuit.

Do you know the car and the builder? Tell us what you think this is in a maximum of 100 words before Monday the16th of July 2018. Also, include other information you know about the car. See next week if you are the winner!

Have a good weekend everyone!

The car is a Tic-Tac, made in Puteux by a man called Dumoulin (but first name Francois unlike the cyclist). The photo is probably taken at the Coupe Internationale des voiturettes in 1920, where Dumoulin paricipated with no. 13 on the car. The Tic-Tac was powered by a 985 cm3 Ruby engine, and drive was by belt, not chain.

This picture taken at the 8th “coupe des voiturettes” at Le Mans circuit in 1920 showing Francois Dumoulin at the wheel of his own creation a 1920 Tic-Tac with a Ruby 895cc engine. Later models had Chapuis-Dornier or Janvier engines and were shaft driven. He certainly was not a superstitious man entering the race with no 13. His race however lasted just one lap when he had to retire with brake failure. It wasn’t as fast as it looked as “The Autocar” noted “The Tic-Tac didn’t have a chance in the race and was a nuisance to the faster cars”.

This is the Tic Tac, driven by Georges Dumoulin at the 8th Coupe des Voiturettes on August 27, 1920, at the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans. It did not finish because of brake problems after one lap. Looking at the driver's name the car was probably named as a reference to the famous French song "Le Moulin de Maître Jean" with its well-known refrain "Ecoutez le tic-tac du moulin". The four-cylinder engine of 1498 cc (64.4 x 115 mm) had three valves per cylinder and two carburators.
