What is it? Quiz #487

A beautiful race car with a very particular shaped brass radiator. We love it! No fenders, no louvres and a small but also large engine inside. One of the cars of this make once set a speed record at Montlhéry. It has a lovely history with some fun facts of how the name was registered in a very important race. The shown car is still around, but not with its original engine inside. We leave it at this and ask you to give us more information. Things that we cannot find ourselves, anecdotes of this car that you know. Good luck!

I think this is a 1925 Vagova 5 CV, built until 1926 by Vareille et Godet, Rue Chaptal, Levallois. They only built a handful of these race cars with its six-cylinder desmodromic ohc engine of 747 cc capacity (49.7 x 64 mm) and a power output of 40 hp. A Vagova was listed for the IV Junior Car Club "200" at Brooklands in September 1924, but it seems its driver Spenser Gray did not appear. The car's builder Edmond Vareille also worked for Salmson and created the chassis for the 1935 SEFAC race car.

This beautiful racing car is a De Coucy from 1926. At least two of these single seater cars were built by Count Enguerrand de Coucy. The engines were advanced - twin overhead cam straight eights of 1100cc and 1243cc (rotating anti clockwise), when supercharged they were reputed to produce over 100hp per litre at 9000 rpm.
De Coucy's were entered into, but did not compete, two races at Monthlèry, the 1927 Coupe de la Commission Sportive and the 1931 French Grand Prix, (as a Demo-De-Coucy).
In 1932 a De Coucy set a speed record at Montlhéry driven by Lucien Clement.

Hello from Grünwald.
My classic car spezialist from a nearby village has exactly this type of car, also with a different engine. It is possibly a Councy 1100 competition.
His car has also a other type of engine. But unfortunateley I could not find any information in the www.
Best regards

It is a de Coucy! Enguerrand de Coucy was a Flying Officer during the Kaiser War.He was a great Engineer and designer. He starteted his career with Doutre in 1912.In 1921 he designed on his own light car fitted with a 1100cc ohv engine which he claimed to rev at 5555rpm.In 1927 de Coucy designed his first racing car with an eight cylinder monobloc dohc engine 51 x 67 mm ( 1100cc) which surprisingly enough rotated anticlockwise!!This little car was nicely made with a tubular front axle and four brakes actuated by cables instead of usual but heavier Perrot - Piganeau system. The tulip shaped radiator was quite an archievement in 1925.As an artist ,de Coucy could only build a nice and narrow chassis with external springing. The frame was underslang at the rear and aluminium was used. De Coucy's were in competition with Amilcar,Rally and Salmson.
Two or three were ever made.
