Stars and their cars – we have an ongoing love affair for them. That makes it the more remarkable that some particularly interesting cars, which were seen with some particularly famous people, appear to have vanished.
Take this shot of Greta Garbo, still considered as one of the greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema. She’s seen together with another girl behind the wheel of a Lancia Lambda registered ‘A473’. A Swedish plate we must assume.
According to this fan website, the picture was taken in May 1924 when Garbo had just been asked to play the lead role in a Swedish movie named ‘Odalisken från Smolna’. Greta agreed and it was the start of a career like not many others. She supposedly bought a new wardrobe for the advance paid, although the film never came out. The Lancia photograph was a profitable one, too, or so it seems: “Greta and her student colleague Vera Schmiterlöw made some extra money. They appeared in an advertisement for a new Lancia Lambda. Greta and Vera were paid 75 Kronars.”
Is it a survivor? The Simeone museum in the US has this car and hints at the possibility of it being the same car. We don’t know. There is, however, another shot of Garbo at a later age behind the wheel of what is believed to be another Lancia Lambda. This is clearly a different car though, with the steering on the left-hand side. Who knows more?

Sequentially numbered MPGP (“Metro Pictures Goldwyn Pictures”) studio publicity shots were issued from 1924 and the sequence reached “9999” in 1926 after which an “MGM” prefix was used. Garbo, said to be training in 1926, was “MPGP 9784”; so, although they were numbered when used not when taken, this second “unlikely Lancia” photo was issued c.1925-6.
Notwithstanding the LHD issue, the curve in the door front edge above the hinge, rounded door top and lack of a foot well vent, also seem to rule out a standard Lambda. The original photo shows more of that spare wheel cover on the left.
