Who knows about the early days of Spa? (Upd. Inauguration Race & Copy of Warwick vase)

According to all records the first official race on the circuit of Francorcamps took place in 1921. However, Jean Marc Jacques from Belgium owns the gold medal on the left plus the  impressive bronze cup that you see below. They belong together as the inscription is the same on both. It reads “Grand Prix de Spa 1920, coupe JO DE CRAWHEZ, first prize F.RENIER on Harley Davidson; organized by the MCV.” The cup is impressive as it weighs 15 kg and is 44 cm high and measures 40 cm around. It was made by a company called Luppens in Brussels. But it’s the date that puzzles Jean Marc as he can’t find any reference to a race held on the Spa circuit in 1920. Yet the size of the cup tells us that it must have been an important race. Who can tell more about the early history of Spa ?

Ferdinand Renier was a Belgian race driver. Jo de Crawhez was the wife of the Baron Pierre de Crawhez, early motoring pioneer and gentleman driver, who developed the idea of a closed-off race course proposing the Circuit des Ardennes in 1902. My opinion is this motorcycle race held in 1920 was a sort of inauguration of the SPA track.

The cup is a copy of the Warwick vase (I A.C. period), discovered in the Adriano emperor estate of Tivoli in 1771, near Rome. The Luppens of Bruxelles were specialized in artistic reproductions.

Gezien de aanduiding Harley Davidson zal dat wel een race voor motorfietsen geweest zijn. Het is hoogstwaarschijnlijk dat er voor de bouw van het circuit er wel al geracet werd.
