Why is my Make of Car not listed?

On a regular basis we get this kind of questions from sellers who cannot find "their make" in the list. Our position is that we list makes of cars only when a specimen comes along. Yesterday - based on a visitor's request - the make Grout has been added to our files (1900-1912 steam cars, Orange, Massachusets, USA). Now you should know that in the pre-war era some 9,000 makes of car existed..., yes we said nine thousand. This is a rough guess based on the numbers we know from France (1400), UK (1200) and USA (1800). Germany (...?), (Italy...?). In case you have more accurate numbers of one of these countries or from other countries we love to hear from you (Contact Us). There was only earlier occasion we heard from Grout, that was when not so long ago David Greenlees was able to acquire the above sign after 25 years of waiting. We think it must be on the wall in his quiet clinic where he is working day and night on saving from extinction the passing Road Dinosaurs.
Trivial knowledge >>> when researching Grout a little we found this lovely picture report on Arthur Funai who has been busy restoring his 1904 Grout since 1955...
